Two post doc positions in Oulu, Finland

Applications are invited for two positions of post-doctoral research fellow for two and three years between 2009-2011 in the group led by Dr. Mikko Vähäsöyrinki and prof. Matti Weckström, Department of Physical Sciences and Biocenter Oulu, University of Oulu, Finland. The appointees are expected to conduct research as a part of a multidisciplinary research team focused on studying neural mechanisms of information processing. Peripheral visual system and downstream ganglia of the insect brain will be used as an animal model. The appointees will be expected to concentrate on some part of the experimental work using electrophysiological methods, but the specific project will be agreed in conjunction with making the contract.
We have excellent facilities for research at single cell, network and whole animal level. Our research group is actively collaborating with several other laboratories abroad, and the work may also include visits or collaboration with those groups.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
a) A completed PhD in biophysics, biology, physics, neuroscience, or a related suitable discipline. Applications are welcomed also from students who will obtain their PhD degree in the immediate future.
b) Practical experience of electrophysiology either at single cell or
network level.
c) The ability to communicate effectively and clearly in English, both
orally and in writing
d) Commitment and self-motivation to work according to high standards and in challenging projects
e) Ability to work in an independent fashion but also to act as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.

LOCATION
Oulu is a sea-side city of about 130.000 inhabitants, with Nokia, chemical and paper industry, the University and University Hospital being the biggest employers.
